Agent spend control

Category

Agent spend control is the enforcement of budgets and authority limits on transactions initiated by AI agents, applied at the moment the agent attempts to spend rather than during a later review. Controls typically cover how much, with whom, for what category, and how frequently.

How it works

A control layer evaluates each payment request against the authority the agent holds: remaining budget, approved counterparties, permitted categories, and rate limits. Requests that pass proceed to settlement. Requests that fail are refused before money moves. Because agent transactions settle in milliseconds and often cannot be reversed, controls that run after settlement are detective rather than preventive.

Example

Northwind's agent has spent $4,960 of its $5,000 mandate. It requests a batch of 1,000 calls at $0.08 — $80, which would exceed the mandate by $40. A preventive control refuses the request before settlement. A detective control would surface the $40 overage at month-end, after the money had gone.

Common questions

How is this different from a corporate card limit?

Card limits apply per card and per merchant category. Agent spend control applies per delegated authority, which can span several rails and several payment instruments, and can enforce a single cumulative limit across all of them.

Can an approval workflow do this?

Not at agent speed or agent volume. Approval workflows assume a human reviewer and a transaction worth reviewing. They are not designed for forty thousand one-dollar decisions a month.
